At least one person was killed, and several others were injured after clashes broke out between two communities in Manipur's Thoubal district, news agency PTI reported on Monday, citing police.
Authorities imposed prohibitory orders in the two affected areas, restricting residents from leaving their homes. A few houses and vehicles were also set on fire during the violence.
Police told PTI that tension began on Sunday night when a group of people allegedly threw stones at a ground in Khangabok village, where a concert was underway. The village, which falls under Thoubal police station, is nearly 25 km south of Imphal.
The incident led to stone-pelting between members of two communities in Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham. A few houses and vehicles were subsequently burnt.
Police said unidentified people opened fire during the clashes, and one person was shot in the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. The deceased was identified as Laishram Rakesh.
Several other people were admitted to hospital with minor cuts after being hit by stones, according to PTI.
Additional state and central forces were sent to the two villages. Police said the situation was under control on Monday morning.
In an order issued on Sunday night, the Thoubal district magistrate said, "There is likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquillity, and imminent danger to human life and property because of the unlawful activities of some antisocial elements."
The district magistrate directed residents of Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham not to leave their homes from 11 pm on Sunday.
