Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) yesterday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking action against former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and several others for alleged contempt of court over their failure to comply with a court order.
On March 27, the Supreme Court ordered Rambukwella to pay Rs. 75 million to the State, while former Health Ministry Secretary Janaka Chandragupta, National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Chairman Prof. S.D. Jayaratne, and its Chief Executive Officer Dr. Vijith Gunasekara, were each ordered to pay Rs. 50 million for violating fundamental rights in connection with irregularities in the procurement of medicines.
The petition alleges that the respondents have failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment, thereby committing contempt of court.
TISL has requested the Court to take appropriate legal action against the respondents under the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Act, No. 8 of 2024, and Article 105(3) of the Constitution.
