A resume is a standard way to showcase your skills and experience while applying for jobs. Most companies still evaluate candidates through resume screening. However, resumes follow a standard template and don’t truly visualize users’ skills.
On the other hand, portfolio sites have become popular for showcasing candidates’ creative skills. However, most portfolio sites were previously limited to developers with web development and website-publishing skills. But thanks to AI, that restriction no longer applies to regular users.
Anyone can now create a personalized portfolio website to showcase their skills and experience creatively without writing code. Web hosting services like Netlify and GitHub also make it easy to publish a simple portfolio site for free.
If you are a beginner, have never written code, and want to publish a portfolio website to showcase your skills and stand out, this guide will show you how to create one for free.
I will show you how to create a free portfolio website using Claude, ChatGPT, Google AI Studio, or even Perplexity, then guide you through a detailed, step-by-step process to publish it for free without writing code.
How to Create and Publish a Portfolio Website for Free Using AI
How to Create a Free Portfolio Website Using Claude
You can create a portfolio site using any free AI model. First, let’s create one using Claude. If you’re not aware, Claude also offers a limited free version, enough for most users to create a great portfolio site.
Step 1: Go to Claude.ai and sign in or create a free account.
Step 2: Once you’re done, paste this prompt into the prompt box and press Enter. You can modify the prompt to add or remove details, or to guide how your portfolio website looks. Remember that the possibilities are endless. Even if you generate a site, you can edit and customize it later, but the free version is very limited. So, ensure that you specify every detail before submitting your prompt.
Step 3: Now wait for Claude to create your portfolio site. You will see a message such as “Creating site.html” with a timer. Leave the tab open until it finishes creating.
Step 4: Once it’s done, Claude shows a preview of your website in the side panel canvas. You can preview what Claude built. You can also see how it looks on different devices, including mobile, and whether it’s responsive.
Step 5: Next, you need to download the file. To do that, in full screen, click the small arrow icon next to the copy icon at the top right of the screen, then choose Download as HTML and save the file locally on your device.
Once the site is created, you can publish using the steps below. You can also create portfolio websites with other free AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini AI Studio, and more. Those offer better free rate limits than Claude.
How to Create a Free Portfolio Website Using ChatGPT
Unlike Claude, ChatGPT offers a completely free version with much more generous rate limits, letting you create a fully personalized portfolio website.
Step 1: If you don’t have a ChatGPT account, go to chatgpt.com and sign in with your free account.
Step 2: Now, enter the prompt in the prompt box and press Enter.
Step 3: Wait for ChatGPT to plan, build, and write the code.
Step 4: In my case, building a portfolio site took six minutes. You can tap the HTML file to preview it. Like Claude, ChatGPT also opens it in a preview.
Step 5: However, it also offers a direct download option, and when it’s done, click on the download portfolio.html, and it opens a preview, and click on the download icon at the top panel, and select HTML option, and save it locally on your device.
How to Create a Free Portfolio Website Using Google AI Studio
Next, let’s build a free portfolio site using Google AI Studio.
You can also use Gemini to create a website, but here I am using Google AI Studio. It gives access to the latest models, is free to use, and offers plenty of customization options. However, if you are a beginner, it can sound complex, so we created this simple guide to help you understand Google Gemini AI Studio.
Step 1: To create a portfolio website using Google Gemini AI Studio, go to aistudio.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Next, in the sidebar, under the Build section, tap on New app.
Step 2: Now Google AI Studio directly shows the preview on the right side. Since Google offers free rate limits, you can re-enter the prompt and make the changes you want. To proceed, click the code icon at the top of the preview.
Step 3: Now find the index.html option. Google AI Studio creates several project files, but index.html holds your entire website. In the file list, hover over index.html, click the three-dot menu next to it, then click Download.
Step 4: Once downloaded, open the file from your downloads folder and check that everything works properly without breaking anything. However, I highly recommend skipping the Export and Publish options here. Export lets you download the whole project, while Publish hosts the app within Google; both steps are unnecessary if you want to publish a simple portfolio site.
How to Create a Free Portfolio Website Using Perplexity
Next, you can also build a website using Perplexity. The free version allows you to create a simple portfolio site.
Step 1: To do that, go to Perplexity.ai, sign in with your free account, and click on the Ask Anything box.
Step 2: Paste the prompt and tap Send.
Step 3: Wait for Phubloxity to create a portfolio website. Once done, it will show you the portfolio.html file. Click on it to preview.
Step 4: After you check the preview, click the download option, download it as an HTML file, and save it locally on your device.
How to Publish Your Portfolio Website for Free
To publish your portfolio site, there are plenty of options, but in this guide, I will show you two free, reliable options: Netlify Drop and GitHub Pages.
Method 1: Publish Your Portfolio Website Using Netlify Drop
Step 1: Create a free Netlify account. First, go to netlify.com and sign up with your email. You can also sign up using Google or GitHub.
Step 2: Go to app.netlify.com/drop and drop the index.html you created using Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Studio from your downloads folder, or click the file and select it.
Step 3: Next, it automatically creates a free address. After a few minutes, your project shows as published with a random address such as sunny-tulip-tf52.netlify.app in my case. You can also click on that link to see the live site.
Step 4: However, if you think it can have a better name, open the project settings and change the project name to something short, such as meera-ai. Your address becomes meera-iyer.netlify.app. Make sure your site name is unique, since there will be hundreds of free Netlify sites out there.
Step 5: Once you have hosted the site successfully, you can share your link. Your portfolio is now live for anyone on any device to access it.
Method 2: Publish Your Portfolio Website Using GitHub Pages
Now let’s look at how to publish it for free using GitHub Pages.
GitHub also lets you host a simple website for free, and you can do everything on the GitHub website without installing anything. However, it takes a few more clicks than the Netlify Drop process.
Step 1: First, create a GitHub account. To do that, sign in to your free account at github.com, then go to github.com/new and create a new repository. For example, you can create ramesh.portfolio and set it to public. Remember that free accounts need a public repository for Pages to work. Turn on “Add a README” and finally tap on Create repository options.
Step 2: Once done, you can upload a file to the repository. Click Choose your files or drag and drop the index.html file, and at the bottom type a short message such as “Add portfolio website” and click on the Commit changes button.
Step 3: Once done, open the repository and go to Settings. Then click Pages in the left sidebar. Under Build and deployment, set Source to Deploy from a branch, pick main and / (root), and click Save.
Step 4: Now wait until GitHub says the changes can take up to 10 minutes. Wait for your site to go public, refresh the page, and wait for it to update. Once it’s done, click Visit site.
That’s it. GitHub will create your page under your name using a GitHub subdomain.
Final Thoughts
This is how you can use free AI tools to create free portfolio websites. Whether you are a beginner and have never written code before, you can follow this simple step-by-step process to create your first portfolio website.
If you have never built one and don’t even have an idea of creating profile sites, you can simply upload your resume into the AI tool and ask it to convert it into a portfolio website and generate an index.html page. If you have any issues while deploying the site, let me know in the comments, and I am happy to guide you.
