Authorities in Delhi closed six metro stations and imposed traffic restrictions on Monday as opposition parties prepared to march to the Supreme Court over a controversial voter list revision.
Police announced diversions along more than 20 roads following days of protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The opposition Congress party planned to submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice, calling for an end to alleged “vote theft” and Kumar’s resignation.
However, Chief Justice Surya Kant declined a request to meet Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his delegation. According to a Congress source, he advised the party to pursue the matter through legal channels as the issue was already before the court.
The protests follow a voter list verification exercise that began last year and resulted in the removal of more than 130 million names.
According to Election Commission data, the deletions included 28 million deceased voters, 63 million people who had relocated, and 30 million who could not be traced.
Opposition parties allege that the exercise benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and disproportionately affects Muslim voters and other minorities.
The Election Commission has denied political bias, saying wrongly removed voters can re-enroll. The BJP has also rejected the allegations.
