The Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a seven-year prison sentence for a British tourist who attacked a taxi driver with a broken bottle in Magaluf following a dispute over the fare.
The trial at the Provincial Court is scheduled for Monday (October 26). It relates to an incident that occurred around 2am on April 8, 2023. The tourist, then aged 18, got into an argument with the taxi driver regarding the fare for the journey to the Hotel Barbados, where he was staying.
He got out of the car and kicked the driver's-side window, shattering it and causing damage valued at 1,650 euros. He then grabbed a broken bottle and, "with the intent to take the life" of the taxi driver, plunged it into his abdomen, inflicting a 15-centimetre-long cut.
The Briton also caused cuts to the driver's left arm when it was raised it in an attempt at defence. The driver sustained skin abrasions that took 30 days to heal.
The Guardia Civil arrested the tourist, who remained in custody until May 23, 2023.
