The San Francisco 49ers were hoping for the best regarding linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s availability for Week 6’s “Monday Night Football” matchup against the Washington Commanders.
Greenlaw, a key cog in the middle of San Francisco’s defense, was handed a one-game suspension from the NFL following Sunday’s 32-29 win over the division rival Seattle Seahawks for headbutting linebacker Ernest Jones, who wasn’t wearing a helmet.
The 29-year-old Greenlaw, who was ejected after head-butting Jones, appealed his suspension, and on Tuesday, the NFL ruled whether or not he would, in fact, be suspended or not.
“Hearing officer James Thrash, jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFLPA, has upheld the one-game suspension of San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw,” NFL senior VP of football & international communications Michael Signora posted on X.
Losing Greenlaw, who ranks second on the team behind Fred Warner (50) with 37 tackles, is a gut punch for the 49ers, who’ve dealt with more injuries than the average team this season.

San Francisco has eight players on injured reserve — defensive tackles Alfred Collins, Sam Okuayinonu, CJ West, defensive ends Andrew Farmer II, Mikail Kamara, linebacker Nick Martin, cornerback Nate Hobbs, safety Darrick Forrest — and the team has three other key contributors sidelined with injuries — edge-rusher Nick Bosa, defensive tackle James Thompson Jr., and safety Marques Sigle.
With fellow linebacker Garret Wallow also set to miss multiple games with a hamstring injury, that leaves the 49ers with very limited linebacker depth with just Warner, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford, and Ogbo Okoronkwo available for Monday’s game.
