Over $876 million in long crypto positions was wiped out in the past 24 hours. Traders who bet on prices going up got a very expensive lesson in gravity.
The flush hit on October 15, 2026, and it landed almost entirely on one side of the trade. Bulls carrying leverage were the ones forced out, while short sellers mostly watched from a safe distance.
What got liquidated, and where
The headline number is roughly $876 million in long positions closed over a single day. A separate tally for October 15 put total liquidations at $850.1 million, with $718 million of that coming from longs.
The two counts differ because different trackers aggregate exchanges and time windows differently. Both point the same way: this was a one-sided bloodbath for leveraged buyers.
At the peak of the selloff, long positions made up between 88% and 92% of all liquidations.
Ethereum took the bigger hit by notional value. ETH liquidations came in somewhere between approximately $149 million and $265 million, depending on the data source.
Bitcoin was not far behind. BTC saw about $101 million to $212 million in liquidations over the same stretch.
Solana and a range of smaller tokens rounded out the damage.
The single largest casualty was a $25.83 million BTC-USDT long on Hyperliquid.
Binance handled the lion’s share of the carnage, accounting for roughly 40% to 57% of liquidation volume. Hyperliquid and Bybit were also major venues for the forced selling.
Across exchanges, tens of thousands of positions were closed out each day. The common thread was margin exhaustion: traders simply did not have enough collateral left to keep their bets alive.
How a liquidation cascade actually works
In crypto perpetual futures, the relevant threshold is called the maintenance margin. Perpetual futures are derivatives contracts that let traders bet on price moves without an expiry date, often with heavy borrowed exposure.
When the price falls far enough, a leveraged long position drops below its maintenance margin. The exchange then automatically closes it, selling the asset to cover the loan.
Those automated sales push prices lower still. Lower prices trip the next batch of positions, and the cycle feeds on itself.
Analysts did not tie this episode to any macroeconomic shift or regulatory headline. No surprise rate decision, no enforcement action, no major policy shock was flagged as the trigger.
Instead, the move was attributed to general price weakness meeting a market stuffed with leverage.
Background: a familiar pattern in 2026
Similar liquidation episodes occurred throughout 2026, each lining up with meaningful drops in market prices.
The pattern also echoes the major deleveraging event of 2025.
The sheer number of positions getting liquidated daily suggests traders rebuilt their risk appetite faster than the market could support it.
What this means for traders and the market
The concentration of losses on the long side tells you something about sentiment going into the selloff. The crowd was positioned for upside, and the market punished that consensus.
With Binance carrying somewhere between 40% and 57% of liquidation volume, a large share of systemic risk in crypto derivatives still runs through a single venue.
Hyperliquid hosting the day’s largest single liquidation shows how much size decentralized perpetuals platforms now attract from big leveraged players.
What to watch next is whether open interest rebuilds quickly in Bitcoin and Ethereum futures. A fast return of leveraged longs would suggest the market has learned very little from losing roughly $876 million in a day.
Also worth monitoring is the long-to-short split in future liquidations. If longs keep accounting for 88% to 92% of forced closures during selloffs, the crowd is still leaning too hard in one direction.
