It’s finally cozy season! And what better way to glide into the holidays than with a big, comfy sweater that’s embracing you like a warm hug?
After all, it’s the best time of year to bust out your go-to knitwear—whether it’s a cardigan, a turtleneck, or a classic crewneck—and should you need fresh styling inspiration for how to wear it, we’ve got you covered. Vogue looked to classic films and rounded up some of the most iconic sweater moments of all time, for your enjoyment. (Spoiler alert: They’re all totally worth pinning onto your shopping mood board.)
The moments range from cheerful—see: Kate McKinnon’s ugly Christmas sweater in Office Christmas Party—to spooky—who could forget Drew Barrymore’s cable-knit sweater in the terrifying opening sequence for Scream? If ’90s style is more your vibe, look no further than the grungy-cool styles seen in Empire Records: Who could forget Liv Tyler’s cropped, fuzzy blue mohair sweater, paired with a pleated mini skirt?
Occasionally, some of these famous cinematic sweaters have even gotten their own quotable monologues, too. Just take Anne Hathaway’s famous “lumpy blue” sweater in The Devil Wears Prada, of which Meryl Streep’s character muses, “What you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis—it's actually cerulean.” It may not have been Miranda’s taste, but it’s endured the test of time. That’s all.
