Paul Frazis has built a career reading the story behind the numbers
Newly named Australia’s Commercial Broker of the Year, Paul Frazis spent more than two decades inside some of the country’s biggest banks. What he learned after leaving them was that the numbers rarely tell the whole story.
Paul Frazis has spent most of his working life around balance sheets, credit committees and lending decisions, yet one of the clearest conclusions he has reached after more than two decades in finance is remarkably simple.
“I learned lending is about people. It’s not just about numbers,” he says. “There’s a story behind the numbers, and there’s a person behind the numbers.”
It is a philosophy that has taken on greater significance since Frazis left institutional banking for debt advisory, and one that has now earned him national recognition. In August, he was named Commercial Broker of the Year at the 2026 Australian Broking Awards, an industry award judged nationally across commercial finance.
For Frazis, the recognition appears to sit slightly awkwardly alongside a natural reluctance to make too much of himself. He laughs easily, frequently redirects praise towards his colleagues, and uses the word “humbled” more readily than triumphant.
“I learned lending is about people. It’s not just about numbers. There’s a story behind the numbers.”
“Being named Australia’s Commercial Broker of the Year was amazing,” he says. “I didn’t think we would get there so soon.”
“The hard work, the long hours and the sleepless nights, trying to make sure we get the best results for our clients, it all made it worth it. Coming from Darwin, it was a big achievement. I felt very proud and humbled by the acknowledgement.”
The award arrives as the business he helped build approaches its third anniversary. George Capital Finance Solutions was founded by his elder brother George Frazis, one of Australian banking’s more experienced former executives. George previously served as Managing Director and CEO of Bank of Queensland, Chief Executive of Westpac’s Consumer Bank, CEO of St.George Banking Group and Chief Executive of Westpac New Zealand, with earlier senior roles at NAB and Commonwealth Bank.
The brothers have assembled a business around an unusual proposition: experienced former bankers using their knowledge of how banks make decisions to advocate from the other side of the table.
For Paul, that shift altered the way he looked at a loan.
“When I was working in the banks, you were focused on the policy risk, the bank’s plans and their risk frameworks,” he says. “I was working for the bank, not the client, essentially.”
At one institution, there was ultimately one institution’s appetite for a deal. Now, he says, “I’ve got 30 options rather than one option”.
More importantly, the starting question has changed. Instead of asking simply whether a transaction fits the lender’s requirements today, Frazis wants to know where the business itself is trying to go.
“It’s not just about pricing, it’s about structure,” he says. “We don’t just think of it as, what can we do today? It’s more like, where can we get you in five years’ time? Where do you need to be and how can we help you get there?”
That distinction matters most, he believes, when a good business does not present neatly on paper.
Frazis recalls the example of a profitable but highly seasonal business. Viewed at a particular moment in its cash-flow cycle, the numbers could appear less attractive than the underlying operation actually was.
“A bank might not look at the whole picture,” he says. “When you get into the nitty gritty and understand how that business operates, the seasonality, or the cash flow coming in and out, it’s actually a good business.”
The advantage of having spent years inside credit systems is knowing what the person on the other side needs to see.
“We understand the business before we present it to the bank,” he says. “Then we present it in a way where they think of it differently. You’ve got to remember, we sat on that side of the table as well.”
A big Greek family in Darwin
To understand why family businesses have become such a natural focus for Frazis, finance only explains part of the story.
He is the sixth of seven children born into a Greek migrant family in Darwin, and the second son. George, the eldest boy, is 17 years older. Between them came four sisters, followed by Paul and then the youngest sister.
The immediate family was only the beginning.
“I’ve got 20 nephews and nieces. I’ve got nine great-nephews and nieces, so it’s a big, big family,” he says. One nephew is only five years younger than him. They effectively grew up together; Frazis later became his best man and godfather to his son.
Most of the family remains in Darwin. Once a year they try to reunite for Greek Easter, a gathering that can reach around 50 people once partners, children, nephews and nieces are included.
“We’re all very close,” he says.
Growing up in a family of that size also provided an early education in competing personalities, hierarchy, negotiation and diplomacy.
“Families can be complex,” Frazis says. “Growing up in a big family, you understand some people’s voices might not get heard.”
“You understand the family dynamics and the hierarchy. You might have different opinions on certain things, or you might disagree. You come together to find a solution at the end.”
Those lessons now surface in meeting rooms rather than around a crowded family table.
“People have put their blood, sweat and tears into that business for maybe 20 or 30 years.”
Family businesses, Frazis says, are fundamentally different because financial decisions are rarely detached from personal history.
“People have put their blood, sweat and tears into that business for maybe 20 or 30 years,” he says. “They want to be successful for their children. There’s succession planning and all that, and it’s more personal and more emotional when it comes to a family business.”
He is particularly interested in the delicate transfer of responsibility between generations. Rather than seeing succession as the moment one generation simply exits and another takes control, he believes both have something valuable to contribute.
“Each generation has a part to play in a family business,” he says. “Even if someone’s retiring, or the father might retire, it’s always good to still have them in the background because they’re the backbone of the business. They created the business and their insight is invaluable.”
“Then you have the next generation coming in. They might have a different point of view, which adds value as well to grow that business to that next level.”
It is difficult to miss the parallel with George Capital itself.
“George was my hero, essentially, when I was growing up.”
For much of Paul’s childhood, George was not simply his older brother but evidence of what might be possible beyond Darwin.
“George was my hero, essentially, when I was growing up,” he says.
“He achieved so much coming from a small town like Darwin. We came from a hard-working, working-class family. My parents were migrants and they worked hard to give us what they could,. To see what George was able to do coming from a migrant family from Darwin, I always admired that and I always looked up to that.”
“We may have different opinions at certain times,” Frazis says. “We challenge each other, but we’re doing it for the team, and we come together and find a solution.”
He pauses before settling on how to describe the experience.
“Working together with George is probably the most rewarding part of my career so far.”
The family involvement has at times extended further. Their niece Katie works in the business, while sisters Anna and Nikki have both been involved. For a period, four Frazis siblings were working within the firm.
What the bank cannot see
Frazis’s career before George Capital moved through NAB, Westpac, St.George and Judo Bank. The large institutions, he says, taught him “discipline, structure, risk management”. His time at challenger bank Judo showed him something different: greater flexibility and the value of looking beyond standard policy.
What he had to unlearn after banking was the idea that the institution’s framework necessarily represented the limits of what could be done.
As an adviser, he still needs to understand those policies, only now across multiple lenders. But his allegiance has shifted.
“I love helping people and getting them to where they need to be,” he says. “Doing this job now allows me to do that and not be restricted to Big Brother telling me what I can and can’t do.”
The language is revealing. Despite a career built around risk, Frazis talks more readily about people than products.
A set of accounts might show an unexplained fall in performance. The explanation may be commercial. Or it may be deeply personal.
“There might have been a life event,” he says. “There might have been a divorce or there might have been a death, or whatever it might be, that made someone not focus on their business at the time and it’s reflected in the numbers. But you don’t know what that cause was.”
His job, as he sees it, is to ask.
“Sometimes you have to ask the challenging questions. You might make someone a little bit uncomfortable, but everything we ask and what we do is to assist them.”
It also explains his pragmatic view of private credit, an increasingly visible alternative to traditional bank lending.
“There’s definitely space for private credit in the market, 100 per cent, and we use it a lot,” he says.
Its advantages can include flexibility and speed. But he is equally clear about the trade-offs.
“It can be more expensive. It might be a short-term solution where it might only be 12 months. So we make sure our clients understand that.”
For a borrower facing a settlement in seven days, for example, private credit may provide breathing room when a traditional bank simply cannot move quickly enough. It can solve the immediate problem while an adviser works on a longer-term structure.
“You still need people. You still need that personal touch. You still need judgement-based thinking.”
Even artificial intelligence, for all its capacity to accelerate processes, runs into the same philosophical boundary for Frazis.
“There’s a story behind every business,” he says. “I don’t think AI is a place where it can be just decision-making.”
“You still need people. You still need that personal touch. You still need judgement-based thinking.”
It is perhaps fitting, then, that international recognition for George Capital has arrived around the same time as Frazis’s individual award.
The firm has won four Gold Stevie Awards and one Silver at the 2026 International Business Awards, including Gold awards in categories covering banking, financial services, venture capital and private equity, and business-service start-ups. It subsequently won the People’s Choice Stevie Award for Venture Capital & Private Equity, taking its 2026 Stevie recognition to six awards. The International Business Awards received more than 3,800 nominations from organisations across 78 nations and territories this year, with winners due to be recognised in Paris on 28 October.
For Frazis, the trip carries another significance. Before Paris, he is heading to Kalymnos, the Greek island from which his family comes, to spend time with his parents. Greece remains part of the family rhythm; his parents return regularly, and the brothers retain close links to their heritage.
It creates an elegant geographical line through the story: Darwin, Sydney, Kalymnos, Paris. Yet Frazis himself seems less interested in arrival than continuation.
George Capital began, he recalls, without an office. Paul was in Australia while George was in Greece, discussing the fledgling business on late-night calls. Meetings happened in cafés. Accreditation had to be secured, clients found, systems built.
“It started basically from nothing,” he says.
Less than three years later, there are national and international awards attached to the name.
Frazis is pleased by them. He is not particularly inclined to stop because of them.
“I’m still learning every day,” he says. “We’re meeting new clients, new family businesses. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but I think we can do more. I want to do more.”
“I want to deliver great outcomes for all our clients. I think we have been doing that. I just want to do more of it.”
For someone whose career has been spent examining what numbers reveal, the numbers still matter. But for Frazis, the real judgement now comes from understanding the people and the stories behind them.
